HOSTS WITH A PASSION

The Pfeffel family

The entire Pfeffel family is passionate about ensuring guests receive the very best. The family business is run by the brothers Daniel and Bernhard Pfeffel. Daniel welcomes you at reception, and is always ready to help with information and advice. Bernhard Pfeffel spoils guests with culinary delights from his kitchen. Daniel’s wife Nicole guarantees everyone is well looked after in the restaurant.

The heads of the family, Theodor and Annemarie Pfeffel, work quietly in the background, but are always there for a chat with guests and staff. Even the adult children Maxi and Laura are welcoming you at Hotel Kristall.

The Pfeffels also own and run the Hotel Hubertushof in Leutasch. This charming establishment is managed by the third of the Pfeffel brothers, Andreas, along with his wife Jelena. Hotel Hubertushof is just a few seconds along the road from Hotel Kristall.

The history of Hotel Kristall

Hotel Kristall first opened in 1973, at the time merely consisting of today’s east wing. What is now the west wing was built in 1963, and had always been run separately as a B&B. Larger reconstruction work in 1979 saw the addition of a connecting building to Hotel Kristall, as well as the construction of a garage and a cellar.

Further buildings were added in 1981 and 1996, including the spa area with a sports and relaxation pool, a sauna section, and two restaurant rooms: ‘Kristallstüberl’ and ‘Arnspitzstüberl’. The family took over Hotel Kristall in 2004, and during the following years more renovation work extended the facility to include a conservatory with an area for couches, TV and a fireplace, a new reception area, and renewal of the hotel restaurant, rooms and suites.

Hotel Kristall reopened on 18th December 2021 after several months of building with a new look and lots of highlights. There’s now an extra floor with new rooms and suites offering generous amounts of living space, an expanded hotel lobby with a bar, redesigned restaurants with buffets, and in the spa area there’s a comfy relaxation area with cosy niches. The top floor offers endless views into the distance and breath-taking vistas from our magnificent Infinity Pool. There’s always somewhere to cool down, warm up or sweat it out, and enjoy magnificent sweeping views, be it in the pool or the new Panorama Sauna offering a great perspective of Leutaschtal valley.

EXPERIENCE

history with a heart

Originally, our family came from the Wachau region of Austria, but as always – love makes other plans. In our case we fell in love with the stunningly beautiful Leutaschtal valley in the Seefeld region. In 1991 the family moved to Leutasch, in 1999 purchased the Hubertushof, and turned it into our first hotel - Hotel Hubertushof.

The 60-bed Hubertushof is the smaller of our ‘hotels with a heart’, and is situated in the Reindlau area, around 3km from the centre of town. The quiet location guarantees guests absolute peace surrounded by idyllic and fantastic views from the hotel patio.

TAKE-AWAYS

Hearty home-made treats

Whether you’re seeking something sweet or warm, every hearty culinary delight is made with all our love. As in all big families, the Pfeffels also have secret recipes handed down from one generation to the next – like our delicious apricot jam, made solely with Wachau apricots, or strawberry jam made from organically-cultivated Leutasch strawberries; or there’s dandelion and spruce shoot syrup and 100% organically nut bread. These are all traditional specialties we’ve’ been making in-house for generations – and selling, too, for the past 15 years –

A SOBER APPROACH

Good schnapps

Our grandmother always used to say, the recipe for herb schnapps was handed down from her grandmother who, in turn, inherited it from her grandmother. It’s no longer possible to work out from which grandmother the recipe originated, but there’s no doubting our herb schnapps has become a legend in its own lifetime.

Similarly, the walnut schnapps, has a delicate, winning flavour; probably because the walnuts come for our Styrian grandmother’s garden – and we also make a great cranberry schnapps.

In spring, we hand-pick the budding fir cone tips that go into our ‘Tannenzapfenzipfelschnaps’. Only the best cone tips, bursting with sap, make it into the bottle – and that’s quality you can taste. “Fresh, green and full of fragrant sap”, as a guest once said. The description pretty much hits the spot.

Being a genuine family-run operation, we can also offer the excellent wines produced by our uncle at Weingut Pfeffel vineyard – made from grapes grown in the best locations in the Wachau region of Lower Austria: Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Blauer Zweigelt!
